Complete Removal of the Lesion as a Guidance in the Management of Patients with Breast Ductal Carcinoma In Situ

Background: Considering highly selected patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), active surveillance is a valid alternative to surgery. Our study aimed show the reliability of post-biopsy complete lesion removal, documented by mammogram, as additional criterion select these patients. Methods: A total 2173 vacuum-assisted breast biopsies (VABBs) DCIS were reviewed. Surgery was performed all cases. We retrospectively collected reports post-VABB removal and histological results biopsy calculated rate upgrade identified on VABB upon excision for those showing residual lesion. Results: observed cases DCIS: 408 classified low-grade, 1262 intermediate-grade, 503 high-grade. The overall upgrading invasive 15.2% (330/2173). 8.2% mammographically 19% without removal. Conclusion: absence following found be associated lower surgical should considered when deciding proper management diagnosis.
